If you have never taken a voice lesson, it helps to know what happens before you walk in. Here is the whole path, from your first message to the practice you take home.
What should I expect at my first voice lesson?
All my lessons run an hour. We start with a relaxed conversation about your goals, your background with your voice, and anything specific you’re hoping to change. I’ll have you sing or speak through a few exercises so I can hear what you’re working with. I also walk you through the basics of how I approach the voice, so we share a foundation for understanding the work we do together. From there, we map out a starting plan and I’ll give you something concrete to practice before our next session. The goal of the first lesson is for me to understand your voice and for you to leave feeling clearer about what’s possible.
Before the lesson: a free 15-minute call
Tell me a bit about yourself and what you’re hoping to accomplish, through the contact form or by calling (253) 414-2267. I’ll respond within 24–48 hours to schedule a free discovery call.
The discovery call is a short conversation where we talk about your goals, your experience, and what you’re looking for in a coach. It’s a chance for us to see if we’re a good fit before you commit to anything. If it is, we find a day and time for lessons that works well for both of us.
Wherever you are starting from
You can start with no formal training at all. If you have been singing or speaking for years, we start from where you are and look at what you want to refine next. Either way, I meet you where you are. Lessons are built around your goals, your style, and your voice, whether you come for singing or for speaking.
After the lesson: a written recap
An hour of voice work covers a lot. After every in-studio lesson you get a written recap by email: what we worked on, and exactly what to practice this week. Because you get the recap afterward, we can both stay fully present for the whole lesson, with no stopping to write things down. Open it when you sit down to practice and pick up where we left off. It is yours to keep, and to look back on later.
The recap is a written summary, not a recording. I still encourage you to record your lessons on your phone, so you can listen back to the work itself.
In person or online
My studio is in Lacey, and I work with singers and speakers across Olympia, Tumwater, and all of Thurston County. There’s plenty of free street parking. Lessons run on weekdays, between 8 AM and 5 PM. I typically work with singers and speakers ages 14 and up.
In-person lessons are my first recommendation, for individual singers and speakers and for quartets, and especially when you are new to voice lessons. Online lessons mean you can work with me wherever you live, even if you can’t come to the studio. They work well for some singers and for some quartets. When you are ill or out of town, we can also switch that week to an online lesson, so we don’t have to make up the missed lesson another way. We work out together on the discovery call what fits you best.
After your first lesson
Weekly lessons on a monthly plan are usually where the deepest growth happens. Voice training builds through repetition, and a steady weekly routine gives your skills the room to take root. Lesson packages and single sessions are also available when a project, audition, or focused goal calls for a different pace. The rates are on my pricing page.
Students on a monthly plan or a lesson package also get the Online Voice Studio at no extra charge. It is my online collection of tools, training and a reference library for building your voice, singing or speaking, and you can open it on any phone, tablet or computer.
