Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions I hear most often about voice lessons, coaching, and getting started.
Getting Started
What does a typical voice lesson look like?
Every lesson is one hour long and fully customized. I start by checking in on how your voice is feeling and what you've been working on. From there, we move into exercises and techniques tailored to your goals: building breath support, expanding range, improving tone, or preparing for a performance. You'll always leave with something specific to practice.
What should I expect at my first voice lesson?
All my lessons run an hour. We start with a relaxed conversation about your goals, your background with your voice, and anything specific you're hoping to change. I'll have you sing or speak through a few exercises so I can hear what you're working with. From there, we map out a starting plan and I'll give you something concrete to practice before our next session. The goal of the first lesson is for me to understand your voice and for you to leave feeling clearer about what's possible.
Where can I find voice lessons in Olympia, WA?
My studio is in Lacey, just minutes from downtown Olympia, and I work with singers and speakers across Olympia, Tumwater, and all of Thurston County. Most students drive in for in-person lessons. There's plenty of free street parking. I also offer virtual sessions for anyone who prefers to work from home or lives further out.
Do I need experience to start voice lessons?
No experience is needed. Many of my students start with zero formal training. I meet you where you are and build from there. Whether you've never sung a note or you've been performing for years, the first step is always the same: a free discovery call where we talk about your goals.
What ages do you teach?
I typically work with singers and speakers ages 14 and up. The approach I use involves understanding how your voice works at a deeper level, and students typically benefit most from that starting in their teens.
What is the discovery call?
The discovery call is a free, short conversation where we talk about your goals, your experience, and what you're looking for in a coach. It's a chance for us to see if we're a good fit before you commit to anything.
How do I get started?
Fill out the contact form or call me at (253) 414-2267. I'll respond within 24-48 hours to schedule a free discovery call. From there, we'll talk about your goals and find the right path forward.
Lessons & Coaching
What styles of singing do you teach?
I work with singers across all styles: classical, musical theater, pop, rock, contemporary, barbershop, a cappella, church music, and more. My approach is grounded in how the voice works as a system, so the principles apply no matter what style you sing.
What is the difference between singing and speaking coaching?
Both use the same instrument: your voice. Singing coaching focuses on vocal technique, performance, and musical expression. Speaking coaching focuses on clarity, presence, projection, and authentic communication in professional and everyday settings. The physical foundations overlap significantly, and some clients work on both.
Do you teach kids and teenagers?
I work with singers ages 14 and up. Teenagers and young adults often see big shifts quickly. Voices change, confidence grows, and the skills stick. For younger children, I recommend looking into excellent community children's choirs like the Olympia Youth Chorus. Programs like that give kids great early exposure, support a love of music, develop young voices appropriately, and offer the social side of singing together.
How long until I see progress with my voice?
Everyone is different. While many students notice changes early on, that's not guaranteed and depends on a lot of factors. What is consistent is this: the more you engage with the process (practicing what we work on between lessons, staying curious about your own voice, asking lots of questions, and bringing what you're learning into your singing or speaking life), the faster and more meaningful your progress will be.
Do you offer audition prep for school musicals or local theater?
Occasionally, yes. Audition prep isn't a major part of my work right now, but I'm happy to help when it lines up with someone's goals. We work on song selection that fits your voice and the role, healthy belt and mix, monologue cuts, walk-in confidence, and a rehearsal plan for the week leading up. Whether you book a single session, a package, or a monthly plan depends on your timeline and what you need. We'll figure that out together.
Can you help with vocal strain or fatigue?
Yes. Many students come to me because their voice tires easily, feels strained, or has changed in ways that concern them. I help identify what's happening mechanically and build healthier vocal habits. For medical concerns, I work alongside speech-language pathologists and other medical professionals to support your recovery.
Do you offer virtual lessons?
Yes. I offer both in-person lessons at my studio in Lacey, WA and virtual lessons. Virtual sessions work well, especially once we've established a foundation together. Many students choose a mix of both.
Do you work with choirs and vocal groups?
Yes. I work with choirs, quartets, a cappella groups, and ensembles of all sizes. Ensemble coaching can be a one-time workshop, ongoing coaching arrangement, competition prep, or custom retreat. Pricing is based on the scope and format of the engagement. Contact me directly for a quote.
