I teach private voice lessons by video for barbershop singers wherever you are. I’ve spent decades in the barbershop world as a performer, director, and coach, and I founded Voices of the Sound, a mixed barbershop chorus in Olympia, in 2025. Online lessons are a full hour, cost the same as lessons in my studio, and start with a free 15-minute discovery call.

Why private lessons for a barbershop singer

Strong ensemble singing starts with strong individual skills. Rehearsal is time with your chorus or quartet. A private lesson is one-to-one time on your own voice.

Lessons are built around your goals, your style, and your voice. That can include the part you sing and the songs your chorus or quartet is working on.

What I bring from the barbershop world

I understand what judges listen for and how to help singers achieve ring, unity, and emotional connection. I have directed choruses since 1987, and I coach quartets and choruses as well as individual singers.

I also wrote the AVF Singer’s Guide: Barbershop Harmony, which applies the Adaptive Voice Framework to quartet and chorus singing ($14.95 paperback, $4.99 Kindle). If you want to read about the physics of a ringing chord, I wrote about it in The Chord That Grows Larger Than the Singers.

How online lessons work

Each lesson is a full hour of one-to-one coaching. We start with how your voice is feeling that week, move into the work your goals call for, and finish with something specific for you to practice.

Lessons run over Zoom, Google Meet, or FarPlay. FarPlay is built for musicians: it carries your voice with far less delay, so we can sing together in time. We pick whichever suits you on the discovery call. My online lessons page has a one-page setup guide for each.

Practice tools for barbershop singers

Students on a monthly plan or a lesson package also get my Online Voice Studio at no extra charge. It includes the full Intonation Lab, my ear training tool for just intonation, the tuning that makes barbershop chords ring, and the Rehearsal Ring Meter, which works for one singer, a quartet or a chorus.

What it costs

Online lessons are the same rates as in-studio lessons: $320 a month for a weekly lesson ($80 a lesson), lesson packages from $75 to $85 a lesson, or $100 for a single session. All the rates are on my pricing page.

How to start

Every singer starts with a free 15-minute discovery call. You tell me what you are hoping to build and how your week looks, and between us we settle on the rhythm that fits.
